The 90/10 Weight Loss Plan was developed by Joy Bauer, a leading nutrition authority, who is also author of the highly respected „The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition“. The 90/10 Weight Loss Plan is based on the premise that if we balance our food intake by eating 90 percent healthy, nutritious food, we can indulge in „fun food“ for the remaining 10 percent.

The New Beverly Hills Diet

The New Beverly Hills Diet, developed by Judy Mazel, is based on the assumption that enzymes found in food „activate“ the human body and that each of the three food groups, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, contain their own set of enzymes to break down food so that the body can properly digest it. It thus recommends „cautious combining“ which means, that it matters when we eat and what foods we eat together. In order for food to be properly digested and not stored as body fat, we should eat fruit by itself and never eat protein together with carbohydrates. Judy Mazel claims that with her diet one can lose 10 to 15 pounds in 35 days.

The Zone Diet

The Zone diet is based on the theory that excess insulin, the hormone that helps control our blood sugar levels, makes us fat and keeps us from losing weight. By regulating our blood sugar levels, the body burns fat more efficiently and we lose weight. To control our blood sugar and therefore insulin levels, we need to get the proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in every meal. If we follow a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet with moderate amounts of fat, the hormones can be balanced within the preferred „zone“.

The Paleolithic Diet

The Paleolithic diet is the diet of wild plants and animals that human species habitually consumed during the Paleolithic period, the Old Stone Age, ending about 10,000 years ago. The diet is also known as the „Stone Age Diet“, „Cave Man Diet“, or the „Hunter-Gatherer Diet“. The basic principles of the Paleolithic diet are to eat only the foods that can be found in the wild, obtained with bare hands or simple tools, and that can be ingested immediately without cooking or processing. This eliminates foods such as potatoes and vegetables that require cooking or processing before they can be eaten, but also many breads, grains, and other processed foods.

Mediterranean Diet

Due to the notably low incidence of chronic diseases and the high life-expectancy rates found in the populations around the Mediterranean Sea, scientists have been studying the traditional Mediterranean dietary pattern extensively over the past several years. The traditional Meditteranean diet is rich in fruit, vegetables, bread and other cereals, olive oil and fish, making it high in monounsaturated fat and dietary fiber and low in saturated fat. Red wine is also consumed regularly, although only in moderate quantities.

Glycemic Impact Diet

The glycemic impact diet is based on the glycemic index GI which measures the effect of foods on the blood sugar level. Foods with a high GI value, such as white sugar and flour, will raise the blood sugar level more than foods with a low glycemic index value, such as vegetables and whole grains. Foods with a low GI value slowly release sugar into the blood, providing the body with a steady supply of energy, and leaving us feeling satisfied longer, while foods with a high GI value cause a rapid, short-lived rise in blood sugar with the result that we are hungry again within a short time.

Atkins Diet

According to Atkins we can change our metabolism and lose weight simply by eating foods which are high in protein and fat and by limiting foods which are high in carbohydrate. Consuming a high level of carbohydrates apparently causes an overproduction of insulin and thus leads to increased hunger and weight gain. The Atkins diet plan allows unrestricted amounts of protein, such as meats, eggs, and cheese, and severely limits foods that contain carbohydrates, such as pasta, bread, and fruit.
