Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome)

Latin Name: Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae

Properties: aromatic, slightly acrid, sweet, non-toxic

Actions: tonifies spleen, supplements Qi, eliminates dampness by causing diuresis, arrests excessive perspiration, prevents miscarriage

Medical Indications: hypofunction of the spleen, abdominal distension and diarrhea, fatigue, shortness of breath, edema, spontaneous sweating, restless fetus syndrome, threatened abortion

Contraindications: not to be used in cases where Qi stagnation manifests as feelings of oppression or distension

Caution: Bai Zhu should be used cautiously in cases of Yin deficiency

Dosage: 5 to 15 grams
