Magnolia Bark
Magnolia bark (Magnolia officinalis) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM for thousands of years. In Chinese it is known as hou pu and is mainly used for treating digestive problems and respiratory problems. It is a bitter and pungent herb and one of the best herbs in TCM for treating colics, digestive gas, bloating, and diarrhea. But it also resolves dampness and that makes it great for lung problems associated with excess mucus. Magnolia bark is often prescribed together with other herbs as part of a therapeutic formula.
Magnolia Bark Health Benefits
The two most important bioactive constituents in Magnolia bark are magnolol and honokiol, two phenolic compounds. In scientific studies, Magnolia bark was found to have anxiety reducing effects, to enhance steroid production, to reduce pain and inflammation, to inhibit fungal and bacerial growth, and to increase acetylcholine levels in the brain. Magnolia bark also contains an essential oil known as eudesmol, which is classified as a triterpene compound, and may provide some additional benefits as an antioxidant. In reducing anxiety, honokiol was found to be five times stronger than Valium, but without the side effects. Magnolia bark may further be a potential remedy for Alzheimer’s disease as it shows powerful effects on acetylcholine levels in the brain. The corticosteroid effects of magnolol may help relieve asthma. In several studies, Magnolia extract was tested on human cancer cells and it was shown that it has the function to inhibit the growth of cancer tumors. And, finally, Magnolia bark can also be used as a topical agent, for instance in dental care or for analgesic muscle rubs.
