Mu Tong (Akebia Caulis)

Latin Name: Akebiae Caulis

Properties: bitter, slightly cold

Actions: promotes urination, drains heat damp, promotes lactation, opens blood vesels, clears heart heat through small intestine

Medical Indications: urinary tract infections due to damp heat in bladder, mouth- and tongue sores, insufficient lactation, painful and stiff joints, amenorrhea

Contraindications: not to be used during pregnancy, not to be used in cases with Yang or Qi deficiency, and spermatorrhea

Dosage: 3 to 6 grams
