Xuan Shen (Ningpo Figwort Root, Scrophularia)

Latin Name: Radix Scorphulariae Ningpoensis

Properties: salty, sweet, bitter, cold

Actions: clears heat, cools blood, nourishes Yin, drains fire, relieves toxicity, softens hardness, dissipates nodules and lumps

Medical Indications: fever, bleeding, red-purple tongue, and dry mouth due to heat in blood, constipation, dryness, dry cough, and irritability due to Yin deficiency, sore throat, red and swollen eyes, swollen tonsils and throat, scrofula, neck lumps, eczema, psoriasis, hemorrhoids, itching

Contraindications: not to be used in cases with diarrhea or dampness in stomach and spleen, not to be used together with Gan Jiang, Da Zao, Shan Zhu Yu, and Li Lu

Dosage: 9 to 30 grams
