The New Beverly Hills Diet

The New Beverly Hills Diet, developed by Judy Mazel, is based on the assumption that enzymes found in food „activate“ the human body and that each of the three food groups, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, contain their own set of enzymes to break down food so that the body can properly digest it. It thus recommends „cautious combining“ which means, that it matters when we eat and what foods we eat together. In order for food to be properly digested and not stored as body fat, we should eat fruit by itself and never eat protein together with carbohydrates. Judy Mazel claims that with her diet one can lose 10 to 15 pounds in 35 days.

The New Beverly Hills Diet Theory

According to Judy Mazel, fruits contain all of the enzymes that are necessary to break themselves down into nutrients and to quickly move through the system. Carbohydrates and proteins, however, require special enzymes that slow the process down. Also, enzymes from one food cannot „cross over“ to work on other food groups. She further claims that fat is just another symptom of indigestion and that people become fat when food is not properly digested. She encourages to consume a single food, for example grapes, for an entire day.

Exemplary Day Of The New Beverly Hills Diet

An exemplary day of the New Beverly Hills Diet may be as follows:

Breakfast: 8oz of prunes
Lunch: unlimited amount of strawberries
Dinner: baked potato
Drinks: water, coffee, or tea

The New Beverly Hills Diet – Criticism

Judy Mazel’s diet is fundamentally flawed, first of all, enzymes necessary for digestion are found within the body and not in the foods we eat, second, foods that are not properly digested cannot be absorbed and cannot be metabolized, and therefore cannot turn into fat. Third, her diet is nutritionally inadequate and unhealthy; it is dangerously low in daily calories, proteins, and many other nutrients. Finally, the New Beverly Hills Diet is very monotonous and is not to be recommended.
