Ma Huang (Ephedra)

Latin Name: Herba Ephedrae

Properties: acrid, slightly bitter, warm

Actions: induces sweating, reduces edema, promotes urination, releases exterior, disperses wind cold, stops cough and wheezing

Medical Indications: cough, fever and chills without sweating, arthritis, edema, bed-wetting, nose bleeding, diarrhea in small children

Contraindications: not to be used in cases with high blood pressure, cardiac arrythmias, insomnia, or spontaneous sweating

Caution: to be used with caution together with MAOI, anti-seizure-, and cardiovascular drugs, long-term use may cause heavy sweating

Dosage: 3 to 9 grams
