Sheng Ma (Black Cohosh Rhizome, Bugbane Rhizome)
Latin Name: Rhizoma Cimicifugae
Properties: sweet, acrid, slightly cold
Actions: vents measles, clears heat and toxins, disperses wind heat, raises Yang Qi, guides other herbs to upper body
Medical Indications: early stages of measles, headaches, sore throat, toxins in upper parts of body with symptoms such as toothache, swelling and pain in gums, lips, or throat, gingivitis, fatigue, prolapse, and shortness of breath due to middle Jiao Qi deficiency
Contraindications: not to be used in cases with Yin deficiency heat, not to be used in fully erupted measles, not to be used in cases with breathing difficulty due to lung deficiency
Dosage: 1.5 to 10 grams
