Dan Shen (Salvia Root)

Latin Name: Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae

Properties: bitter, slightly cold

Actions: removes blood stasis and relives pain, clears heat, cools blood, stimulates menstrual discharge, nourishes blood, soothes irritability, calms spirit, reduces abscesses

Medical Indications: menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, mass formation in abdomen, postpartum abdominal pain, pain in chest and abdomen, acute arthritis, traumatic injuries, purpura, subcutaneous bleeding, subcutaneous infections, febrile disorders, angina pectoris, toxic sores, breast abscesses, insomnia, irritability, palpitations, high blood pressure

Contraindications: not to be used during pregnancy, not to be used during postpartum bleeding, not to be used together with anticoagulating drugs

Dosage: 6 to 15 grams
