Chi Shao (Red Peony Root)

Latin Name: Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae

Properties: bitter, sour, slightly cold

Actions: clears heat, cools blood, removes stagnation and swelling, clears liver fire

Medical Indications: fever due to heat in blood, red-purple tongue, skin blotches and bleeding, gynecological disorders due to hot blood, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, acute inflammations, traumatic injuries, swellings and stagnation, jerky legs, muscle spasms, diabetes, duodenum and stomach ulcers, rashes, abscesses, boils, and sores

Contraindications: not to be used in patients with blood deficiency, not to be used in cases of abdominal pain due to spleen deficiency

Dosage: 6 to 15 grams
